Sean Landers

Petzel Gallery

2018

Description

Published by Petzel Gallery, New York, 2018.
This catalogue was published on the occasion of the artist’s fourth solo exhibition at Petzel Gallery, New York, his first at the uptown location, from March 1 to April 21, 2018, as well as the simultaneous premiere of a new suite of Landers’ tree paintings at the ADAA’s The Art Show, at the Park Avenue Armory from February 27th – March 4th, 2018.

This publication illuminates the importance of the drawing practice in Landers’ oeuvre, and brings together three distinct and intertwined bodies of recent work; the Aspen tree paintings, the small-scale drawings of text excerpted from the tree paintings, and the new yellow legal pad paintings—a direct reference to the pad of paper which is the means by which Landers hones into what exactly he wants to say with each painting he makes, and how exactly he wants to say it. Connections can be made in cross-referencing the texts and drawings present in the yellow legal pad paintings with those in the tree paintings, which are made manifest as images “carved” into the bark. Once can literally see the marriage of the writing-side of Landers uniting with the painting-side of Landers.
